CO2 Performance ladder

CO2 is a greenhouse gas which contributes to the gradual warming of our planet. This warming has an impact on our climate and with it on our quality of life. It is caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, petrol and coal.

CO2 reduction
CO2 reduction is about cutting down CO2 emissions. The term ‘emissions reduction’ which is often used actually means reducing emissions of all greenhouse gases (including methane and nitrous oxide as well as CO2). The CO2 emissions that we generate have a major impact on the environment. That is why we want to prioritise this reduction. The good thing is that reducing CO2 will usually also result in a reduction in costs. It therefore cuts two ways.

Participating in initiatives
Schuuring’s strategic business plan specifies that the need to reduce emissions will be formalised. This is being done by being certified for level 3 of the CO2 performance ladder.

The CO2 performance ladder is a tool to encourage companies which are certified to be aware of CO2. This means having insight into the CO2 emitted as a result of company activities and implementing policies to reduce these CO2 emissions.

Four different aspects have been identified within the CO2 performance ladder:

  • Insight: insight into the company’s own CO2 emissions (energy flows and emissions).
  • Reduction: Investigation into options for reducing emissions and drawing up reduction targets.
  • Transparency: The way in which the organisation communicates about its policy, CO2 footprint, targets and progress.
  • Initiatives: The extent to which the organisation is aware of initiatives in the market, participates in them or develops its own initiatives.
